This year has been crazy for Badgers. We have seen a large increase in badger calls this year. We believe it’s because of the drought and it pushed the badgers towards the city.

Bat Diseases
Bats are common carriers of rabies, a deadly disease that is transmitted through saliva (biting). When a person is exposed to rabies, timely administration of a vaccine known as post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) can prevent infection. Once a person becomes infected and symptoms begin to occur, rabies is almost always fatal.
Histoplasmosis is another disease associated with bats. Its symptoms vary greatly, but the disease primarily affects the lungs. When this happens it can be fatal if untreated. In addition, Histoplasmosis is caused by a fungus that grows in soil and material contaminated with droppings from animals, including bats. Bat droppings, also known as bat guano, can contaminate the soil and cause infectious spores to be released when the soil is disturbed.

- Bats can find their food in total darkness. They locate insects by emitting inaudible high-pitched sounds, 10-20 beeps per second and listening to echoes.
- There are only three species of “vampire bats” – bats that live off the blood of animals. None of those species lives in the United States.
- Bats can live to be more than 30 years old.
- Most bats have only one pup a year, making them extremely vulnerable to extinction.
- Bat mothers can find their babies among thousands or millions of other bats by their unique voices and scents.
